Inertial Confinement Fusion research:
history, approaches and future perspectives
Recently the National Ignition Facility demonstrated ignition of a compressed deuterium-tritium capsule for the very first time. This is a fundamental milestone in the quest for controlled fusion energy, but this does not mean that fusion energy for civilian use is right around the corner and several, perhaps even harder challenges are ahead.
In this seminar I will provide a brief overview (historical and contemporary) of the different fusion approaches, including some recent achievements at the National Ignition Facility, and with particular emphasis to my research activity at the Institute of Laser Engineering at Osaka University, including future research plans.
Finally, I will provide my perspective over the future of fusion energy research, including considerations about the recent flourishing of private fusion startups and I will discuss what I consider to be the main challenges we will have to overcome.
The seminar is held in the large lecture hall in the new building of the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (address: U Slovanky 2525/1a, Praha 8).
The seminar will be held in English.
